 Painting by Paul DeLarocheAll of Kingsley’s preconceptions about Heaven and Hell came from his Grandmother, Martha St. James. Religion was her shield and her sword.  It separated her from the horrors going on under her roof and gave her what she craved – a righteous rationalization that believing in God was more important than her daughters.   She tried to make up for this by taking Kingsley to her fundamentalist church when he still lived in New Orleans.
