Off the Edge

The butcher is first.

Black handle and wide blade.

She draws a rough stone from the water.

Pulls and listens.

Her mouth tightens like a virgin’s kiss, as she

blows invisibles off the edge.

She picks up the fine stone.

Smooth and wet

against her cheek.

She angles the blade high to bevel the edge.

Her face draws near.

She needs to feel the heat.
